HEALTH
EXPLORER GALLERY IN EXPLORATION PLACE (WICHITA, KS)
The Delta museum approach is illustrated by this interactive gallery
on personal and public health in the recently opened Exploration Place.
Delta approaches allow the creative learning center to change exhibits
more economically due to built-in systems to support change. White Oak
Associates, the executive producers of all the exhibits and theaters
in Exploration Place have developed the Delta approach, and Exploration
Place is an early application of the concept. Designed by Gyroscope
(Oakland, CA), the long-term experience platform shown in this picture
includes the staircase, the underneath theaters, the upper level chromakey
stage and remote screen, and the cherry wood columns that organize the
space. The changeable opening scenario includes the interactive exhibits
(foreground) where you can test your balance, blood pressure, bone density
and other health assessments, the graphics and public health mystery
that is to be solved in Crumbine's Laboratory (background), the activities
in the small theater (right) and the storyline for the Virtual Theater
(above), an opening scenario by Beverly Reiser called Virtual Heart,
is where visitors get to direct oxygen molecules in the right places.
The building contractor, Dondlinger & Sons Construction Co., Inc. (Wichita,
KS), built the experience platform elements and handled all the electrical,
HVAC and code aspects of the structure, while Maltbie Associates (Mount
Laurel, NJ) fabricated the interactive exhibits in this gallery.
